The UK Cathode 2 Partners

Welcome to the home page of the UK partners in the ESPRIT Working Group CATHODE 2. CATHODE is an acronym for Computer Algebra Tools for Handling Ordinary Differential Equations. For full information see the Cathode 2 home page.

The UK partners in Cathode are at two university sites. One group are at the School of Mathematical Sciences, Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London (general information is available on the college and the department) and the other at the Mathematical Institute, University of Kent at Canterbury.

Areas of research interest

The London group work and have worked in the following areas:

• Closed-form solutions of first order ODEs
• First integrals
• Over-determined systems of PDEs with applications to symmetries, conservation laws, and the solution of nonlinear ODEs and systems of order greater than 1
• Top-level integration: making a user-level program callable from a general-purpose algebra system
• Implementation of common primitives in the REDUCE system
• Use of Cartan's equivalence method

The Kent group work and have worked in the following areas (click here for further details):

• Differential algebra and differential Gröbner bases (for over-determined systems)
• First integrals
• Symmetry methods, especially non-classical symmetries
• Applying the differential Gröbner basis packages to finding symmetries and hence solving DEs and systems of DEs
• Painlevé equations (nonlinear special functions)
